Third Way

Washington, DC

Bernard Schwartz is chairman and a trustee of Third Way, a non-profit, non-partisan strategy center for progressives. Third Way promotes a 21st century progressive agenda by working with elected officials, candidates, and advocates creating policies and marketing those ideas in the public debate. Since its launch in January 2005, Third Way’s work on security, economics and culture has been used widely by progressive leaders. Its program is divided into three projects:

  • The National Security Project: creates policy and communications strategies that many progressive leaders use to frame the national security debate, including the discussion of past failures and forward-looking recommendations to many of today’s hotly discussed issues.
  • The Culture Project: Develops new progressive approaches to cultural issues on topics such as immigration reform, abortion and the proliferation of pornography over the Internet.
  • The Middle Class Project: In 2006, Third Way developed a diagnosis of the progressive economic disconnect from the middle class and then presented those findings, new middle class policies and strategies to numerous Senators and members of Congress.
